Why be a part of the Community Foundation?

Service:  GVCF accepts and acknowledges contributions in many forms.  It establishes investment policies, conducts investment reviews, provides quarterly statements, and awards grants according to the parameters of each fund agreement.

Ease:  Creating a fund is simple and quick, requiring minimal paperwork and no fees.

Security:  Assets are managed by investment professionals at area trustee banks.

Diversification:  Funds are aggregated to provide maximum diversity and strength in the investment portfolio.  Each fund earns the same return regardless of size.  At the start of 2018, the foundation had over $14.3 million in assets.

Accountability:  Receipts and expenditures are independently reviewed and fully disclosed to the public.  Copies of IRS filings are available online and in the Community Foundation’s office.

The foundation administers the fund in the fund sponsor’s behalf.

Perpetuity:  Gifts become part of a perpetual trust with income continuing through the years to support projects chosen by the donor.

Economy: Accounting, legal, and other administrative expenses are covered by a modest charge against the income of each fund.

Tax Benefits:  As a publicly supported organization, GVCF offers maximum deductibility for income, gift, and estate tax purposes.

How does it work?

Funds can be created with a minimum gift and built over a five-year period or started immediately with a $10,000.00 donation.

The principal of each fund is invested with trustee banks to produce distributable income.

After a year’s incubation period, the fund will begin to make distributions to selected nonprofit organizations.  The foundation’s goal is to distribute 5% each year; however, distributions cannot invade historic gift value (principal).

Distributions are made at an annual event in March.  Scholarship awards are mailed directly to the students’ schools.

How else can I give?

In addition to establishing a fund, gifts can be made to any existing fund.  The Community Foundation accepts both outright and deferred gifts in many forms including cash, checks, publicly traded securities, real estate, and bequests.  Donations can also be made via PayPal on the “Donations/Contact” page.

GVCF acknowledges all donations for tax purposes.  It also sends acknowledgments to family members when memorial gifts are made.

Types of Funds

  • Donor-Advised: sponsors make annual recommendations regarding distributions.

  • Donor-Designated: sponsors name the charitable organizations to receive distributions.

  • Field-of-Interest:  sponsors specify a charitable need, but not a particular organization to receive distributions.

  • Scholarship: sponsors define the selection criteria to provide educational opportunities.

  • Unrestricted: a committee of community members selects the beneficiary.
